🎬 Exclusive Q&A With Michael Hues: Senior Adult Time Video Editor
Q: What is a standout project from Adult Time that you’ve worked on recently?
A: ‘Pure Taboo: Under The Bed – House Of Silk’ — This episode features August Skye in a brand new episode of Under The Bed! [The scene is a] dramatic horror, where August Skye unexpectedly transforms after being bitten by a spider!
Q: What was the most challenging moment in the film to edit, and why?
A: The visual effects on August’s transformation were a challenge for sure! Throughout the creative process, I like to build in what I imagine viewers will enjoy as much as I will! Although, sometimes I feel like I am part of the audience — just as curious as to what the end result will look like!
Q: Can you share a moment when something clicked perfectly during the editing process?
A: A big part of this episode is the sound design. After listening through dozens of soundtracks, my favourite part is when you lay down a track and it seems to be perfectly timed with the scene, all on its own! I like to call this editor’s luck…but the inside joke is that we skillfully edit it to match so perfectly that way! 😄
Q: What’s your favourite shot or moment from the film, and why?
A: There is a shot where the production team experimented with a “rack focus,” and it worked out so great! For those who aren’t familiar, a rack focus is when you pull the camera back and zoom in at the same time.
After August Skye gets bitten by the spider in her garden, she frantically stumbles back into her house…this technique really gives the viewer a sense of what the character is going through. I decided to enhance this shot by doubling up the footage and overlapping it with a sort of double exposure look to really capture the stress & confusion of this moment!
Q: What is your favourite editing technique or tool you use to enhance the film’s narrative?
A: In this episode I definitely think the sound design will help the viewer feel really immersed into this dark, gritty world. The sound cues are definitely fun to explore by mixing & overlapping lots of sounds together!
Q: How long have you worked for Adult Time as a Video Editor?
A: This will be my 16th year at the company, so I have been around since the inception of Adult Time!
